Goodwood Festival of Speed
Goodwood Festival of Speed
An early start at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, ahead of the crowds that would fill the event for the rest of the day. Quiet time as crews start their work, covers are removed and there is a feeling of calm. But not for long.
The Classics
My original love. And first up the hill in the morning. These masters of engineering, where size of engine drove performance always put a smile on my face. Driven by gentlemen and lady racers, they roar up the hill with their big engines pushing as hard as they can. This was a time of experimentation, before wind tunnels and technology, it was sheer grunt power. Lots of personality.
70th Anniversary of Porsche
With a movie soundtrack and the extravagence of daytime fireworks, the selection of Porsches, never seen together before in the UK entered the circle in front of the house, parading around before parking up.
You felt the sense of occasion as the 70th banners appeared from nowhere and rose up the front of the house. bystanders waved their flags and cheered. My favourite moment; when Russ Kempnich, in his race suit invited his 'girl' to join him on the other side of the barrier, with his cheeky Australian smile.
Up the Hill
What can I say. A very impressive range of unique and special Porsches in one place, and ready to run up the hill. From Porsche #1 to the very popular Le Mans winning 911 RSR still in its ‘pig’ livery and proudly wearing its bug splats and scars from the race, and everything in between. The Paul Smith stripy early 911 put a smile on many faces.
This is one of the simplest formats. Drive up a hay-bale lined hill, at speed. Try not to ‘bin’ it on the way. Then drive back down again. Brave drivers attempt a 'burnout' as they come past Goodwood House and the Le Mans winning Porsche RSR in its 'Pig' livery was no different.
Worth Going?
Often called the Festival of Greed, this is a great event for meeting like minded friends, with a limited size and a simple mentality. There is plenty to see and the action keeps moving. You can get up close and personal to the cars of your dreams and the latest releases. Like a car show, but in glorious surroundings.
