Goodwood 78th Members Meet

Goodwood 78th Members Meet

One of my favourite events of the year. With a laid back, weekend with friends feel. Casual and accessible, this is an understated, yet special event. The racing, as ever, is fierce. With the cars of your childhood battling for the honours.

The paddocks

As the day starts, covers are taken off, kettles are put on and the mechanics get to work. Engines start to roar and cars head for the pre-start.

A brief rain shower and the paddocks become shelter for the many bystanders.

As the day closes, covers are slid back on and an eery quiet descends

The Pit lane

Race teams line the pit wall, watching the action, drivers wait nonchalantly for their driver change. Marshall’s check, and double-check their paperwork, and eager eye on what is happening on the course, as cars scream past their position.

With many of the races having a driver change, the pit lanes take on an almost party atmosphere

GT40

You hear the GT40’s before you see them, the familiar roar of their V8 engines shattering the quiet.

As a photographer, there is often one car, which catches your attention. For this meet, it was the 1965 Ford GT40 piloted by Andre Lotterer, quickly establishing the fastest lap in the Gurney Cup.

The Racing

As ever, the racing is fierce, whether it is the Edwardian specials from the early 1910’s, the Bentley blowers from 10 years later, the Ford Mustangs of the 1960’s or the Ford Capri’s of the 1980’s. Something for everyone.

The People

The marshals, teams, drivers and spectators, make the members meet a special place. Motor racing is as much about the human stories as the technological achievements.

As sun set

A treat was in store. Something different. A rally stage to take us through the sunset into the dark.
